Historic Letters to The Argus

A year-by-year archive of historic letters and articles mentioning the Brighton and Hove Older People's Council.

2002

Voice of the third Age, by Lis Solkhon

It is good to see the OPC showing its teeth and I hope it will continue to do so.

2003

Upper house

As a member of the shadow Brighton and Hove Older People's Council (OPC), I would like to take issue with F Matthews (Letters, June 5) who claimed "all the participants of the OPC are party activists or failed councillors".

An authentic voice for older people

Brighton and Hove City Council agreed the OPC must have the ability to influence decisions before they are made and this requires that the OPC has the right to receive information, ask questions and make suggestions.

Young blood

Is it not time we either abolished the OPC or had a retirement age on our city council of 60? This would would make way for fresh blood and make the council more active and less like a day centre for the elderly.

2005

Letter: We were there

The OPC has also taken part in Trading Standards planning days, including advice on bogus doorstep salespeople. The OPC is also on the Community Safety Forum and has been invited to join the Independent Policy Advisory Group.

Letter: Axe this service and the elderly will suffer

The OPC plans to submit comments in response to Railways For All.

2006

Older People's Council brings matters to attention

Without the warning from the OPC that these rail services were under threat, no objection would have been raised by Brighton and Hove City Council.

Letter: Older people must not stay long in hospitals

The Older People's Council (OPC) was particularly concerned about the cramped conditions in wards last year which led to poor care being provided to very ill, older people.

Vet bill burden

The OPC is only too well aware how important pets are to older people and are concerned veterinary treatment may impose a considerable financial burden on them.

2007

Joined-up rails

In September 2004, the Brighton and Hove Older People's Council (OPC) put in a strong plea against the suggested termination of the Watford-Brighton service at Clapham Junction.

The silver vote

The second Older People's Council (OPC) election will take place in June this year. Nine older people will be elected to the OPC to serve a four-year term of office.

Not representative

I have enjoyed my term of office in the OPC and I wish them the best of fortune in the future.

2008

Old people wanted

If you feel strongly about the provision being made for older people today, please come along and think about becoming an OPC member. Come and see what the OPC is about. Come and support us. Come and join us.

It's a talking shop

The OPC is nothing like the original blueprint I and others worked to. Publicity appears non-existent and, looking at the original manifesto, the OPC has deviated considerably. A Wright Sheridan Terrace Hove...
