Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee (HOSC)

What We Do

  • As representatives of the over 50+ demographic in Brighton and Hove we are invited to many Committee meetings and consultations. We are there to voice an opinion and to ensure that the needs of the older population are taken into account.

How We Work

The Brighton and Hove Older People's Council (OPC) is an independent, non-party-political, voluntary, listening, advising and campaigning group that is free to attend and participate in.
It gives a voice to people aged 50 and over who reside in the Brighton and Hove City Council area.
We act as critical friends to the Council, attend relevant council and health meetings, scrutinise policies, invite policy decision makers to our meetings & take part in consultations.
We are in regular contact with other older-people related organisations We publicise issues through public meetings, community contacts and writing to decision makers.
The OPC holds regular Public Meeting / Events.
If you would like to be added to our distribution list do please let us know and Contact Us or email us at brightonhoveopc@gmail.com

  • Reducing Harms from Drugs & Alcohol - Brighton & Hove Drugs & Alcohol Strategy The Strategy is a partnership between the Council, the NHS, the Police, the Fire Service, the Probation Service, the Voluntary Sector and the Community. It is a 5 year plan to reduce the harm caused by drugs and alcohol in the City. The Strategy is reviewed annually and the Scrutiny Committee is responsible for monitoring its progress. Homelessness up by 110% since 2010. Need to reduce the Stigma and Shame of addiction. Glasgow had private 'Injecting rooms' to reduce the harm of drug use, but this is illegal England and anyway the council has no money.
  • Short Term Lets (STL) Task & Finish Group There are 1000s of Air B & B type properties in the Brighton and Hove area, all unregulated, many with Antisocial consequences yet there is still a huge shortage of accommodation in Brighton
